16 October 2018 - Don't Waste Mt Stirling Initiative - Award Winners
Congratulations to Team Green (Environments Department of Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management) for winning the Litter Prevention Award at the recent Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards for their amazing ‘Don’t Waste Mt Stirling’ project. The ‘Don’t Waste Mt Stirling’ project was awarded a grant from Sustainability Victoria in September 2016 to help support and grow the project. The project was implemented from Winter 2017 and has continued to be a year-round initiative targeting summer and winter visitors.
The Environment Team at Mt Stirling created a portable waste kit with three compostable bags for general rubbish, recycling and compostable items for day and overnight visitors at Mt Stirling. By colour coding the bags the same colours as our bins at home – red, yellow and green respectively, it helps links our waste and recycling behaviours with that at home.
With the help of the Year 9 students at Lauriston (Howqua campus), Larry the Lyrebird was born, made entirely out of rubbish collected at Mt Stirling. Mt Stirling visitors are encouraged to take selfies with the artwork and use the hashtag “#dontwastemtstirling”.
Study results from the last two seasons have been extremely positive and Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management will continue to implement the project year-round. The project cannot succeed without the help of visitors, school groups and educational groups using the Waste Kit while they visit the resort.
